Life moves forward relentlessly, a constant flow of moments slipping through our hands like the sands in an hourglass. There's something profoundly poetic about an hourglass—an ancient, elegant device that reminds us how time, both past and present, continues to shape who we are. For example, when I faced the challenge of adapting to life with arthritis as a child, I learned patience. I also discovered the importance of celebrating small victories—lessons that continue to shape my approach to life's challenges today.

Many of us are taught to keep our eyes fixed on the horizon, always looking forward. The future, we are told, is where the answers lie. For me, reflection has been about recognizing the resilience I had all along. At four, I was diagnosed with arthritis, and at twenty-one, I faced paralysis. The road hasn't been easy, but each challenge taught me something new: patience, tenacity, and a deep sense of empathy. For me, this simple practice has often highlighted small victories that otherwise might have been lost in the noise of life. Identify Your Patterns: Look for recurring themes in your experiences. Are there certain struggles that keep reappearing? Identifying these patterns helps us gain greater self-awareness and understand how past behaviors influence our current actions (Writing Through the Soul, 2024). When I recognized my ongoing struggle with feeling "less than" due to my physical limitations, I saw how often I was making decisions based on fear of inadequacy rather than possibility. That insight allowed me to start making choices aligned with my true self. Find the Resilience in Your Story: No matter how difficult our past, there's always evidence of resilience. I've faced many moments of doubt, yet every time, I found a way forward—even if it wasn't the way I initially imagined. Recognizing our resilience is key to moving forward with confidence. The hourglass doesn't just symbolize the past—it also represents the present moment. It's about using those stories as a launching pad, a source of strength that helps us make the most of the time we have left. Wisdom from the past gives us the courage to shape our present and future with intention.

It's about using my experiences to help my clients—those experiencing burnout, stress, or simply feeling lost—to understand their own hourglass and the beauty hidden within it. It's about turning those experiences, those grains of sand, into gold.
